Obituary: Tendar la

Dharamshala, 11 June, TibetNet: The exile Tibetan Administration mourns the sudden demise of one of its most prominent civil servants, Tendar la.

After a prolonged battle with illnesses, he finally succumbed to lung cancer and left us last Saturday evening. He was 48.

All the offices and departments here at the hub of the Administration will remain closed this afternoon, following an hour-long prayer session.

Since April 1986, Tendar la had served the Department of Information and International Relations in various capacities, particularly in its translation and publication works.

Before joining the Department, Tendar la has also served at the McLeod Tibetan Handicraft Centre for about a year, which he left for further studies in 1982 .

Since 2003, Tendar la had been working at the New York-based office of Tibet, as the editor of News Tibet, a news magazine.

"Tendar la's life was committed to his office work. He has enormously improved the standard of all the publications that came out of this department," said Thubten Samphel, secretary of the Department of Information and International Relations.

Mr. Samphel further said that "He was also an outstanding translator. He has set the standard for translation from Tibetan to English, and the professionalism and commitment. He gave in this particular field is deeply appreciated by all."

"By nature he was unassuming. His passing away is a loss for all us. We will miss him very much."
